Delivering affordable, accessible, sustainable and enjoyable cooking-from-scratch across some of Greater Manchester’s most side-lined communities.

Around 75% of our work is delivered in areas featuring in the 20% most deprived in the country (English Indices of Deprivation 2019). We work with a diverse range of people across many communities, many of whom are experiencing poverty, homelessness and other complex crisis. Our diverse range of community support projects reflect our vision for a society where accessing, cooking and enjoying ‘good food’ is a possibility for all. By ‘good food’ we mean food which is locally and sustainably sourced with minimal environmental impact, food which is culturally and dietarily appropriate for the people eating it, which is nutritionally adequate and which brings pleasure to those preparing and eating it.

We work extensively with people experiencing food insecurity brought about by poverty, crisis or living in ‘food swamps’ or ‘food deserts’; we want to see the end of food banks and the end of prioritising profit over people. Our community cooking and food redistribution projects contribute towards a society where social cooking and eating events act as an inclusive and cross-generational way to increase community cohesion and reduce isolation. Our vision includes people young and old, across all communities, being empowered with the knowledge and confidence to make positive food and diet related choices and the skills to cook affordably and sustainably from scratch.

Built into all of our projects is also our vision for a food system which is kind to the planet, where locally and sustainably grown nutritious produce is plentifully available, where food waste is minimised and where the needs of both people and the planet are met, regardless of profit margins.

We have been working with Cracking Good Food for over eighteen months and they have been delivering cooking sessions with our residents, both locally with face to face classes and nationally online. They have been happy to design bespoke courses that really suit the needs of our residents. For example, they now run online COOKAlongs bi-monthly that are aimed at young care leavers and they have proved very popular, inspiring participants who are just moving into their own home to cook affordable meals from scratch. I would highly recommend them because their flexibility makes them such a good partner to work with.
